22/01/09: On Course for More Business
Doing business on the golf course may be an old cliche, but for a group from York it really has proved an excellent way to increase business.
The Givers Gain Golf Society (GGGS) was formed in 2006 by three members of the York Knavesmire chapter of BNI (Business Network International). The aim was to extend the "givers gain" philosophy of breakfast meetings to a more relaxed backdrop at Aldwark Manor golf course. The society founders, Alan Brown, Mark Burn and Bryan Samson continue to attend BNI and run GGGS. They view networking as a smart way of expanding their client base.
Club Captain, Alan Brown, Owner of Tower York (Financial Services) Ltd , enthused "I continue to reap the rewards of the GGGS. It has proved to be an excellent opportunity to invite valuable clients and contacts along for a day out and to forge strong bonds on which to do business."
Solicitor, Mark Burn, the society's Secretary, is raring to go for the 2009 season. "The golf afternoons are a way that we can develop business relationships. For instance, Alan and I had known each other for sometime but, thanks to the relaxed environment of the golf course, we now pass business regularly to one another. Over the last two years that has led to over one million pounds worth of turnover for our respective businesses."
Golf Society Treasurer, Bryan Samson of online stationers Netstationers said "Our first game of the next season is on the 29th of April 2009 and we will meet once a month until October. The popularity of the golf society is evident. We have now played on 13 afternoons, over two seasons, with an average of 14 “golfers" attending each event. We always welcome new guests; golfing expertise is not necessary, just a willingness to enjoy an afternoon away from the office and discuss business over a round of golf."
